Potential energy of the water is converted to kinetic energy due to an elevation drop

The energy in the water is converted to mechanical energy in the turbine

The mechanical energy in the turbine is converted to electrical energy through a generator

HEY MATE HERE'S YOUR ANSWER;

A hydroelectric power station converts the kinetic energy of flowing or falling water into electrical energy that can be used in homes and businesses. ... The water rushes past the turbine, hitting its blades and causing it to spin, converting some of the water's kinetic energy into mechanical energy.

The potential energy of water held behind a dam is then transformed into mechanical energy (rotation) and the final transformation takes a place in a generator to electrical energy. In other words several transformations are required to produce the electrical energy.

Harnessing Hydroelectric Power. The combination of electrical generators and hydraulic turbines allows hydro power systems to convert the potential energy of dammed or flowing water into storable electrical output.
