Answer: In protecting sovereign boundaries in regards to intellectual property it has a positive effect on the GDP because if the technology is produced and sold here it offers more jobs and revenue for the entire country. If it was legal to make the same technology just with a different name and offer it at a reduced cost then the value of the product would drop. It is difficult to keep these secrets because of how connected the industry is. For a phone, the idea could come from the U.S. but the screen may be purchased/produced  in China, and the internal mechanism could be bought from Germany, and the only thing made in the U.S. would be the metal outside. From buying the pieces from different countries they have to share some of the secrets in order to get the product. But luckily there are over 34 federal laws, regulations, and industry standards to protect privately owned IT. In conclusion, by protecting intellectual property, the country is able to improve its yearly GDP.
