Mr Bates, an eminent
surgeon in London was Gulliver's master and mentor. Gulliver had worked as apprentice to him. Mr Bates helped Gulliver
establish as a surgeon. He
recommended him to be a surgeon to the Swallow, a ship on which he made a voyage or two into the Levant. After spending three years and a half, Gulliver decided to settle in London. Mr Bates recommended him to many patients. After Mr Bates's death,
his business began to fail.
