Oxidising agent are those who oxidise other and reduce itself . oxidation means addition of oxygen and reduction is addition of hydrogen but in more fundamental terms oxidation means loss of electrons and reduction means gain in electrons .

In reaction 1. aluminium lose electrons and change its oxidation state from 0 to +3 , that's why Al is reducting agent as it donated its electron to Fe . and iron gain electrons and change its oxidation state from +3 to 0 .

same case in reaction 2 . sulphur ( of sulphur dioxide ) gained electron and changed its oxidation state from +4 to 0 and that's why it is oxidising agent as it reduce itself and oxidised sulphur of hydrogen sulphide .
