(a) Food:
Since time immemorial, forests provided food to its inhabitants. As mobility of these peoples are confined within the forest land, entire food products are gathered by them from the forest trees. The people residing outside the forest land also benefited by the forest food products.
(b) Clothing:
Primitive people, particularly the people residing in polar region, still collets their clothing material directly from the forest.
(c) Shelter:
Forest provides shelter to its inhabitants. The houses in every corner of the earth still relies heavily on the wood supplied from the forest for woodwork in their houses.
(d) Fuel:
Third World, underdeveloped countries still use forest wood as a major source of fuel. Due to absence of fossil fuel or its high cost, people in some areas still prefer wood for heating and cooking.
(e) Raw material for industries:
(i) Argo based industries are wholly dependent on forests for raw materials. The important industries partly or totally dependent of forest products are paper industry, cardboard, matchbox, plywood etc. Wood pulp for paper making, rayon, cellophane and cellulose for allied industries are noteworthy
(ii) The wood collected from the forest is used to produce furniture, materials for ship and rail and other transport equipment making.
(iii) Wood after burning produces charcoal—a good substitute of coal—used in different industrial activities. It is also used for domestic heating purpose.
(f) Other necessary products:
Various other important products are derived from different trees. Among these important materials are nuts, chickle, sandalwood oil, turpentine, cinnamon etc.
Bark of a tree provides cork, some leaves supply materials for beverages, cosmetics, drugs, fibers. Nuts are used for button making and oil extraction.
Rubber is derived from the latex of havea tree, rosewood oil is collected from rosewood tree and used for perfume-making. Balata for cable making, wax, resin, honey and gum or chickle, tannin etc. are other important product of the forest.
(g) Medicinal Plants:
Forests provide useful medicinal plants. Roots form the base of products like sarsaparilla; bark is used for quinine and tannin extract. Nuxvomica and camphor is widely used for medicines.
