(1) Detritus, (2) Fragmentation of detritus, (3) Duff, (4) Catabolism, (5) Humus

Explanation:

Breakdown of dead organic matter into inorganic substances is known as decomposition.

1) A dead organic matter / organism or biomass is regarded as a detritus.

2) Fragmentation of detritus is done by detritivores. It is a process in which detritivores feed on the dead organic matter, turning it into smaller fragments.

3) A duff is a layer of moderately to highly decomposed leaves, needles, fine twigs, and other organic material found between the mineral soil surface and litter layer of forest soil.

4) Catabolism is the next step in which bacteria and fungi secrete digestive enzymes. It helps in the formation of simple and soluble organic and inorganic substance. A part of this nutrient is taken up and immobilized by the bacteria.

5) This process leads to the formation inorganic substances and humus. Formation of humus is called humification.
