Answer:

The compound is Plaster of Paris ,chemically known as Calcium Hemihydrate.

It is a powder like substance which reacts with 3/2 molecules of water to form a hard compound known as gypsum, chemically Calcium dihydrate

CaSO.1/2H₂O + 3/2 H₂O ==> CaSO₄.2H₂O

Plaster of Paris can be obtained by heating Gypsum at 373k

CaSO₄.2H₂O + heat ==> CaSO₄.1/2H₂O + 3/2H₂O

Precaution

It readily reacts with water and forms a hard substance. So, it should be stored in an air tight and water proof container.
