Optically active compound-
An optically active compound is one which is capable of rotating the plane of vibration of polarized light to the right or left.

◆ Examples-
Following compounds on hydrogenation gives optically active compound.
1. CH3-CH=CH-CH(Br)-CH3
2. CH2=C(CH3)-CH(Cl)-CH3

Answer:

Hydrogenation of A:

CH2 = CH CH(Br) CH2 CH3    on hydrogenation     CH3 CH2 CH(Br) CH2 CH3

The product formed by the hydrogenation of compound A does not have a chiral carbon. Therefore, it is not optically active.

Hydrogenation of B:

CH3 CH = CH CH(Br) CH3    on hydrogenation    CH3 CH2 CH2 CH(Br) CH3

The product formed by the hydrogenation of compound B has a chiral carbon. Therefore, it is optically active.
