answer: (a)When metals react with non-metals, electrons are transferred from the metal atoms to the non-metal atoms, forming ions. The resulting compound is called an ionic compound.

(b) Ionic compounds usually form crystalline structures when solid. ... Ionic compounds typically have high melting and boiling points, and are hard and brittle. As solids they are almost always electrically insulating, but when melted or dissolved they become highly conductive, because the ions are mobilized.

c) These forces are usually referred to as ionic bonding . As the ionic lattice contains such a large number of ions, a lot of energy is needed to overcome this ionic bonding so ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points.

d)Many other solvents such as kerosene and petrol are not capable of breaking the ionic bond. Hence, can not dissolve them, and they all have covalent bonds and which are non-polar in nature

The correct statement from the following is a. Ionic compounds are formed by the transfer of electrons between metals and non-metals.

  • The formation of an ionic compound takes place by the gain or loss of electrons. The metal loses electrons to become a positively charged cation in ionic bonding, while the nonmetal receives those electrons to become a negatively charged anion. Hence, option a is correct.
  • Ionic compounds are generally hard so, option b is incorrect.
  • Ionic compounds possess high melting and boiling points so, option c is incorrect.
  • Ionic compounds are not soluble in kerosene oil. Hence, option c is incorrect.
