The degree of following polynomials :

1) 4x²y + 2x² + 2y² - 16

The degree of this polynomial is 2 .

2) 2a³bc + 3a³b - 2a²b²c²

The degree of this polynomial is 6.

_____________________________

Degree of any polynomial is the highest power raised to any of its variable .

  • Here in the first polynomial , the highest power raised to x or y was 2 , so the degree of the polynomial is 2 .
  • In polynomial 2 , the highest power is 6 ( a²b² c² = 2 + 2 + 2 ) , so the degree of the polynomial is 6 .

Like we saw in polynomial 2 , when in a monomial , two or more variables are present , we add the powers of all the variables and find the monomial with highest power . That highest power is the degree of the given polynomial .

Degree of polynomial gives the number of solutions of the polynomial .
