Japanese music, the art concerned with combining vocal or instrumental sounds for beauty of form or emotional expression, specifically as it is carried out in Japan. Korea served as a bridge to Japan for many Chinese musical ideas as well as exerting influence through its own forms of court music. Also to be considered is the presence of northern Asian tribal traditions in the form Ainu culture surviving on Hokkaido island. However, it should be pointed out that the island isolation of Japan allowed it to develop its own special characteristics without the intense influences of the Chinese and the Mongols so evident in mainland cultures. Therefore, in the ensuing discussion all the “foreign” elements are placed in the matrix of traditions and styles that are characteristically Japanese.

Answer:

TRADITIONAL JAPANESE MUSIC

Gagaku is the oldest of Japan's musical traditions and includes dances and songs in two styles – kigaku, which is instrumental music, and seigaku, a form of vocal music. There are several Japanese dramatic forms in which music plays a significant role. The main ones are kabuki and noh. The music played on the Chinese instrument is generally very fast, technically brilliant, and high in pitch. The Korean instrument, by contrast, is typically played in a low register, with less emphasis on technical brilliance than on the depth and meaning of the music. Narrative songs are found in the genre called kasa accompanied by a flute and drum. A Korean puk (or buk), a barrel drum of the type that accompanies pansori narrative singing. Kagok, sijo, and kasa are all types of court music. The dominant narrative form of music performed today, however, is the folk genre pansori.

Vocal Music

Chinese vocal quality is often described as being high-pitched and nasal. This is generally true, but there are regional differences. The northern style of singing (such as Peking opera) tends to be higher and more shrill than the southern style of singing (such as Kun opera or Nanguan).
