This is closely linked to the grassland ecosystem. Grasses are found in a dominant state with nongraminaceous herbs mostly of leguminous type (they maintain the nitrogenous fertility of the soil), scattered bushes and occasional trees, such as, prairies of United States of America or Canada, Pampas of South America, stepped of Eurasia, tussocks of New Zealand, downs of Australia and veldts of South Africa. There is hot summer, cold winter, seasonal 25-75 centimetres rainfall. Rainfall is usually short of forming forests and more than the amount of that induces desert formation. Grasses can be sowed formers or grown in bunches. Height of grasses may vary from a few centimetres to 1.5 metres in most of the moist regions. Shoot biomass is about 50-1000 gram per metre square. Primary productivity is related to rainfall. Root system is extensive in this ecosystem. Grazing and fire help maintain grassland and prevent woody species to invade the area, if done in a correct way. Fauna consists of Deer, elk, Bison, Wolf, Prairie dog, bear, bighorn sheep, rabbit, mice, budges, coyote, burrowing owl.
