The light reaction includes a series of events such as light absorption, hydrolysis, formation of oxygen O₂ and formation of ATP and NADPH.
- The light reaction initiates only on supplying the light energy. The photosystem consists pigments such as chlorophyll within thylakoids.
- Plants have two photosystems :
- Photosystem-I (PS-I): absorbs light of wavelength 700 nm.
- Photosystem-II (PS-II) : absorbs light of wavelength 680 nm.
The light reaction takes place in thylakoids of the chloroplast. When the light absorbs, chlorophyll-a will get excited to a higher energy level followed by a series of reactions. By using photosystems PS I and PS II, solar energy is converted into energy molecules ATP and NADPH. Also, hydrolysis takes place and releases oxygen O₂.
