Mathematical reasoning: Finding the missing number

Given:

A sequence of numbers is given:

29, 31, ?, 41

Find:

The missing number in the sequence.

Solution:

For finding out the missing number of the given sequence, first of all, we have to identify the relationship between the numbers given.

Lets take first two numbers and find the difference between them.

31 - 29 = 2

If it is something like AP, then third term (missing number) = 31+2 = 33

now, 33 + 2 should be equal to 41 but its not like that. So, our approach is incorrect.

On thinking more of these numbers, we get to know that the difference is incremental and it is given by consecutive multiples of 2.

31 - 29 = 2 = 2 × 1

Second multiple of 2 is 2×2 =  4,

∴ Missing number = 31 + 4

                              = 35

Now, adding third multiple of 2, i.e., 6 in 35, we get

35 + 6 = 41 which is the fourth term. Hence, this approach is correct.

So, the missing number is 35.
