Southeast Asia: Sociocultural Aspects

H.-D. Evers, in International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences, 2001

1.1 Conceptualizing Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia has undergone a multitude of crises, economic, political, cultural, and social. Most of these have resulted in a fresh look at what course Southeast Asian societies have taken, and what concepts and theories can be used to analyze new developments. As a matter of fact, some of the new concepts and paradigms have been exported to other world regions, utilized and generalized and entered into the realm of general theory, while their procreators and their region of origin have often been forgotten. Dualism, plural societies, involution, strategic groups, or loosely structured social systems are by now standard terms in social science research, though originally they were empirically-based concepts used to describe Southeast Asian social conditions.

What we now call Southeast Asia has gone through a cycle of the social and political construction of itself. As Said (1978, p. 5) has rightly asserted ‘geographical and cultural entities … are man-made.’ Localities are not given, but socially constructed. To mention just a few terms that over time have signified the different external and internal efforts to construct a more or less unified image of the area: the ‘Golden Chersonese’ of Ptolemaeus, Further-India, Hinterindien, Extrême Orient, Nusantara, the Greater co-prosperity sphere, Pacific Asia, Southeast Asia, and, more recently, ASEAN.

Though empirical social science research has been carried out on many divergent topics, a limited number of theoretical concepts have emerged that show a certain consistency over time. The following table (Table 1) proposes a rough guide to the flow of sociocultural research on Southeast Asian societies. It also provides a framework in which to locate major concepts used in anthropological and sociological research on Southeast Asia. Some of these concepts will be explained below.
