It neither ionizes to form hydrogen ions nor does it dissociates to give hydroxide ions. Therefore, it is neither an acid nor a base. In fact CaCl2, or calcium chloride, is a salt. So, by analogy, CaCl2 is neither an acid or a base just a neutral salt. It is commonly used as an electrolyte in sports drinks and other beverages including bottled water. The extremely salty taste of calcium chloride is used to flavor pickles without increasing the food's sodium content.
