Parts and function of the neurons

  • Neurons are structural and functional unit of the nervous system. It is involved in providing an exact response to the stimulus received by it.
  • It is composed of many parts among which the following four are important due to its functions:
  1. Dendrites: It is a thread-like structure present in the axial of the cell body of neuron. It is the place of the neuron in which information for response is received.
  2. Axon and cell body: The dendrites passes the signal to the cell body. From it through axon the received information travels as an electrical impulse.
  3. Synapse: This is the joining region between two neurons where the electrical impulse is converted into a chemical signal and passed on to the brain to elicit the proper response.
