The phenomenon in which cell contents shrinks away from the cell wall is called Plasmolysis.

It occurs when water moves out of a cell and the cell shrinks. It also results in no truger pressure inside the cell which causes the cell to lose its shape.

During plasmolysis, cells fail to perform their function because they lose their shape as well as the activity of their organelles.
