The objective case is used for nouns and pronouns which function as objects.

  • There are three types of object: a direct object, an indirect object, and an object of a preposition.
  • Objective case is the case of a pronoun when it functions as one of the following:
  1. the direct or indirect object of a verb or verbal
  2. the object of a preposition
  3. the subject of an infinitive
  4. an appositive to an object
  • The examples are  me, us, you, him, her, it, them, whom and whomever.
  • It is also known by the name accusative case.
  • The direct object is the thing being acted on by the verb.
  1. I saw 'him' yesterday.

"Him" is the direct object of the verb "saw."

  • The indirect object of a sentence is the recipient of the direct object.
  1. I wrote her a letter.

"Her" is the indirect object of the verb "wrote"

  • The object of a preposition is the noun or pronoun governed by a preposition.
  1. It is a gift from them.

"Them" is the object of the preposition "from."

  • In English, the objective case only affects personal pronouns .
  • "I" cannot be an object.
  • The object of a preposition cannot be the subject of a verb.
  • Use "whom" if it's an object.
