- All together, these are called a soil profile (figure 3). The simplest soils have three horizons: topsoil (A horizon), subsoil (B horizon), and C horizon.
- Soils are named and classified based on their horizons. The soil profile has four distinct layers: 1) O horizon; 2) A horizon; 3) B horizon, or subsoil; and 4) C horizon, or soil base (Figure 31.2. 2). The O horizon has freshly decomposing organic matter—humus—at its surface, with decompose vegetation at its base.
- The main soil horizons are A, B, C and D. Most important for plant growth, the A and B horizons are the top two layers of the soil. The A horizon is where there is most soil life and is sometimes called topsoil.
- Soils typically have six horizons. From the top down, they are Horizon O,A, E, B, C and R. Each horizon has certain characteristic
