The plant in the image is Mimosa plant. It folds the leaflets with touch. When we touch one part of the plant, the stimulus spreads from that part or cell to branch and then the leaflets of that particular branch get closed.
Explanation:
Mimosa plant is also "Touch-me not" plant or shame plant. It is commonly called "Chui Mui" in India. It has compound leaves which get folded, dropped or close when the plant is touched or shaken to protect or defend themselves from outside environment.
How does it really defend itself?
- The cells of touch me not plant lose water at the base of leaves and they become flaccid.
- Then the stimulus spreads to other cells and parts of the plant and water escapes i.e, the plant lose water through it's leaves through pulvinus.
- As a result there is change in turgor pressure in the cells and the leaves are dropped or get closed.
