Identify the substances that are oxidised and the substances that are reduced in the following reactions. (i) 4Na(s) + 0₂(g) → 2Na₂O(s) (ii) CuO(s) + H₂(g) → Cu(s) + H₂0(I)

In the first reaction

Sodium(,na) is oxidised

Becuase oxygen is added to it

In the second reaction oxygen reduced from copper .

And on the product oxygen is added to hydrogen.......

Here in the equation 4Na + O2 = 2Na2O, 4Na is oxidized, and O2 is reduced.

Again in the second equation CuO + H2 = Cu + H20, H2 is oxidized, and CuO is reduced.

In oxidation and reduction electrons are transferred between two species through a chemical reaction.

The substances either gain or lose electrons.
