Identify the substances which are oxidised and the substance that are reduced in the following reactions. (1) Zn(S) + 2 AgNO3 (aq)  Zn (NO3)2 (aq) + 2 Ag(S) (2) MnO2(S) + 4H Cl (aq)  MnCl2 (aq) + Cl2 (q) + 2H2O(l)

In first in Zn is oxidised and Ag is reduced in second Mn is reduced and hydrogen is oxidised

1) ZnS is oxidized as it gains oxygen.
AgNO3 is reduced as it loses oxygen.

2) MnO2 is reduced as oxygen is removed.
HCl is oxidized as it gains oxygen.
