1. He had lived in Mumbai . (Past Perfect)

2. He was going to school . (Past Continuous)

3: Children sang a song . (Simple Past/Past Indefinite)

4. They had been waiting since Monday . (Past Perfect Continuous)

5. I have seen the Taj. (Present Perfect)

Explanation

Past Perfect Tense is used to refer to an action that happened before another action in the past.

S+had+V3+O.

We use the Past Continuous for an action that we were in the middle of. We often use the past continuous and simple past together when one (shorter) action comes in the middle of another (longer) one. The policeman stopped me (shorter action) in the middle of the longer action (when I was driving my bike).

S+was/were+V1+-ing+O.

Simple Past Tense is used to :

a)  talk about actions which occurred at regular intervals in the past.

e.g. Last year I drove to Ambala once a month.

b) to talk about situations which existed for a period of time in the past.

e.g. Thousands of years ago humans lived in caves.

c)  Talk about non-continuous actions which occurred at a definite time in the past.

e.g. India launched Mars Orbiter Mission in 2013.

      Jack ate a mango.

The verb in the sentence is ‘ate’. Its tense is ‘Past Simple’. Past Simple Tense form ends in ed or V2. Simple past tense form of the irregular verbs is used. We use did+V1 form in negatives and questions. For example,’ The car did not start.’ and ‘What did you tell the police?’

For questions in simple past tense we use the following structure:

Did+S+V1+O?

Past perfect continuous tense is used for an action which happened over a period of time. For example, I had been reading that book since morning. In this sentence, the reading happened since morning.

Form

The past perfect continuous uses ‘had been + an ing-form’.

Present Perfect Tense is used to talk about an action that has been done in the recent past and has been completed in or before the present time.

S+has/have+V3+O.
