Word equation :-

Magnesium + Hydrochloric acid → Magnesium Chloride + Hydrogen

Chemical equation :-

Mg + HCl → MgCl₂ + H₂

Balanced chemical equation :-

Mg + 2HCl → MgCl₂ + H₂

________________________________

In this reaction, magnesium being more reactive than hydrogen, displaces it from 'HCl' and forms two new products i.e. Magnesium Chloride and Hydrogen gas.

So, it is a displacement reaction [single].

________________________________

Displacement reaction : This reaction occurs, when an element (more reactive) displaces another element (less reactive) from it's compound.

Some other examples :-

• Fe (s) + CuSO₄ (aq) → FeSO₄ (aq) + Cu (s)

• Pb (s) + CuCl₂ (aq) → PbCl₂ (aq) + Cu (s)
