When green colored crystals of Ferrous Sulphate is heated, it decomposes to Ferric Oxide, Sulphur Trioxide and Sulphur dioxide.

The sulphur dioxide gas gives the burning smell.

FeSO4 ---> Fe2O3 + SO2 + SO3

--------------------------

From this reaction we can observe that, a single substance breaks down or decomposes to give simpler substances.

This reaction is called Decomposition reaction.

--------------------------

Decomposition reaction can be further classified into :-

  • Thermal decomposition  - using heat
  • Photo decomposition - using light
  • Electrolytic decomposition - using electricity

-------------------------

Therefore the above reaction is Thermal Decomposition reaction.
