Identify the type of reactions taking place in each of the following
cases and write the balanced chemical equation for the reactions.
(a) Zinc reacts with silver nitrate to produce zinc nitrate and silver.
(b) Potassium iodide reacts with lead nitrate to produce potassium
nitrate and lead iodide
Answers
a). AgNO3 (aq) + KI (aq) -> AgI (s) + KNO3 (aq)
In this case, the reaction is double displacement reaction.
(b). 2KClO3 (s) ----> 2KCl (s) + 3O2
In this case, the reaction is reduction reaction.
Balanced chemical equations are as follows ':'
a) Zinc reacts with Silver nitrate to produce zinc nitrate and silver.
An(s) + 2AgNO3 = 2Ag + Zn( NO3)2
In the above reaction Silver is the byproduct and it is the substitution reaction.
b) Potassium iodide reacts with lead nitrate to produce potassium nitrate and lead iodide.
2Kl + pb(NO3)2 = Pbl2 + 2 KNO3
This is a type of precipitation reaction.
When we added potassium iodide to the lead nitrate solution to produce yellow-colored precipitate of lead iodide and potassium nitrate.
Yellow color indicates that the chemical reaction has taken place.
