Answer:

In the excerpt of ‘The Jilting of Granny Weatherall’, the two themes of abandonment and betrayal are clearly developed. The author develops the two themes over the course of the text by narrating the experiences of Ellen’s sufferings, that not many can deal with. Although such events made her stronger, it did not heal easy and kept haunting her even on the deathbed.

Answer:

Two themes in which are developed in this extract are suffering and remembrance. The theme of remembrance is shown in the beginning of the paragraph when Granny is remembering the stories that Father Connolly would tell, and the experiences she’s had with him. This connects with suffering because Granny could be missing those times and regretting that she took for granted. The theme of suffering is developed here when the author states “she was blind and sweating with nothing under her feet”. The diction used in this phrase describes many unpleasant feelings such as being unable to see anything, whilst enduring the sticky yet wet feeling that comes with sweating, whilst feeling the sensation of either hovering or falling, happening all at the same time.
