The following equations represent functions:
y = 4x + 13 (Option 1)
y = 3x² - x -1 (Option 5)
Solution,
- An equation is said to be a function if for each possible input value there exists only one output value.
- The equation y = 4x + 13 is function because for every possible value of x their is only one output of y. For example if x = 1 then y = 4(1) + 13 = 17.
- Option 3 and 4 are not function because they would give two values of y as the solution. For example in equation y² = 16 - x², if x = 2 then y would be y²=16-(2)² i.e. y = 2√3 and y = -2√3.
- Option 5 is also a function because for every value of x there would be only one value of y.
Hence Option 1 and Option 5 are correct.
