Z in the following sequence of reactions is :

CH₃ - COONH₄ →┴∆ X (→┴(P₂O₅) ) Y (→┴(H^2 O/H⊕) ) Z

1. CH₃ - COONH₄ →┴∆ CH₃ - CONH₄ (Methanamide)

=> Decomposition of salt on heating

2. CH₃ - CONH₄ (→┴(P₂O₅) ) CH₃ - CN (Acetonitrile )

=> P₂O₅ converts alkanamide into nitrile

3. CH₃ - CN (→┴(H^2 O/H⊕) ) CH₃ - COOH ( Acetic acid )

=> Hydrolysis of nitrile in acidic medium

• Hence, X = CH₃ - CONH₄, Y = CH₃ - CN and

Z = CH₃ - COOH

• Final product = Acetic acid
