IES or Professor degree, which one is better?
Answers
Explanation:
This is one of the questions which generally pops out in most of the masters students in India. Firstly, both the professions are equally good & You need to find yourself where you fit in & which work gives you the most satisfaction. I would individually take both the professions :-
Professor :-
for it you need to evaluate your research skills which you can do by assessing kind of research you did in your Bachelor thesis project (BTP) & Maters Thesis and the research projects which you might have undertaken during your semester breaks, rate all the research works on the scale of 10. If average of all is above 7, then go for it. Similar things you need to do for evaluating your teaching skills (if you have involved in any teaching work in past) here score of 5 & above on scale of 10 is good.
Now the starting post in this profession would be of Assistant professor with a basic of 67700 -basic ( you will get around 1.15–1.25 times of basic ). The career growth depends on the quality of papers you are publishing, your relation with your department’s professors & your teaching skills…even you perform average or just below average you can have timely promotions and can easily become professor. At the designation of professor you can have salary on basic of 144200 INR ( you will get around 1.7 - 2 times), this is the last pay scale they have & happily retire at the age of 65. You can publish books & get royalty, you can attend conferences, etc.
* Salary figure was based on 7th pay CPC and it was for the universities under central Government, I have no idea about Salary structure & promotions of private universities & universities under state Government.
IES :-
You need to see whether you have interest in using Engineering for application based things, You are happy to frame technical policies, whether you can handle significant number of staff manpower under you, whether you can handle small amount of pressure from Government/public.
Now the starting salary would be of 56100 -basic ( you will get around 1.1–1.2 times of basic ) and you don’t need to do Masters & Phd (work for an extra 7–9 years) for it. The career growth is strictly time bound whether you perform average or below average & if you are not involved in corruption, you can reach up to the Higher Administrative Grade (after 32–33 years of service) with maximum salary on basic of 182200 INR ( you will get around 1.4 -1.9 times) & happily retire at the age of 60. You will have the authority here & may have diversification in your job profile.
