Let p(x) = x² + kx - 5/4

Given : 1/2 is the root of p(x)

=> p(1/2) = 0

(1/2)² + k(1/2) - 5/4 = 0

1/4 + k/2 - 5/4 = 0

k/2 - 4/4 = 0

k/2 -1 = 0

k/2 = 1

k = 2
