Let the number be "x"
x-1/2 is the difference
When multiplied by 4 it becomes 4(x-1/2)
The result is 5
Therefore
=>4(x-1/2)=5
=>4x-2=5
=>4x=5+2
=>x=7/4

The answer is 7/4
