given -1/3 is one of the root of the equation

on substituting we get

9(-1/3)² -k(-1/3) - 5 = 0

9(1/9) +k/3 - 5 = 0

(on cancelling 9 and 9)

k/3 + 1 - 5 = 0

k/3 - 4 = 0

k/3 = 4

k = 4*3

k = 12
