p(x) = ax²- 3(a - 1) - 1

1 is the zero of the polynomial. This means that wherever p(1) = 0. So wherever there is x, substitute 1.

p(1) = 0

0 = a - 3a + 3 - 1

0 = -2a + 2

2a = 2

a = 1

Hope this helps! :)
