The equation for work defined by physics is as following:

W=Fs∗cosθ

(W) is the work done by the force (F) that is causing the displacement (s) on the object. (θ) is the angle between the force and displacement. Work is measured in the unit of “newton-meter”, which corresponds to “joule”.

As the equation explain, work is defined as the force times the displacement of an object, W=Fs. However, this is only when the displacement is in the same direction as the force (which is… never).
