Answer:

so x + y = - 4.96

Step-by-step explanation:

Given Linear Equation with two coefficients

            17x + 35y = 40

            23x + 17y = 80

We know by cross multiplication,

  x = \frac{b_1 c_2 - b_2c_1}{a_1b_2 - a_2b_1}

  y = \frac{c_1a_2 - c_2a_1}{a_1b_2 - a_2b_1}

in the given equation,

    a_1 = 17 , b_1 = 35 , c_1 =  40

      a_2 = 23 , b_2 = 17 , c_2 =  80

so  x = \frac{35\times 80 - 17\times 40}{17\times17 - 23\times35}

  x =\frac{2800 - 680}{289 -805}

   x = -4.108

and y = \frac{40\times23 - 80\times17 }{17\times17 - 23\times35}

      y = \frac{920 - 1360 }{289 -805 }

       y = \frac{440} {- 516}

    y = -0.852

Now , x + y = - 4.108 - 0.852

so x + y = - 4.96
