If 21 more than 3 times a number is -15, what is the number?

then

3x + 21 = (x+5) - 12

3x + 21 = x - 7

2x + 21 = -7

2x = -28

x = -14

3x + 21 =  - 15 \\  =  > 3x =  - 21 - 15 \\  =  > 3x =  - 36 \\ =   > x =  \frac{ - 36}{3}  \\   = >  - 12
