Step-by-step explanation:

Since, 2x+1, x+2, 2, and 5 are in proportion,

them (2x+1)/(x+2)=2/5

=>10x+5=2x+4

=>x=-1/8

Let a be the mean proportion between 3.5 (1-x) and 8 (1+x)

then

3.5 (1-x)/y=y/8(1+x)

=>y^2=3.5*8*(1-x^2)

=>y^2=28*(1-1/8^2)

=>y^2*=4*7*63/64

=>y^2=2^2*7*7*3*3/(8*8)

=>y=2*7*3/8

=>y=21/4
