If 2x+y+3z=12 and x+3y-z=16 then find the value of x+y+z

2 x + y + 3 z  =  12   -- (1)
x + 3 y - z = 16    --- (2)

since there are only two equations, we find answer in terms of x or y or z, one of them.

- (1) + (2) *2  :  y -  z =  4

substitute that in (1)
        2 x + z+4 + 3z = 12    =>   x +2 z = 4

so  x + y + z

 = 4 - 2z + 4 + z + z
 = 8
