To Solve:

  • if 3 is a factor of x² -kx +12, find
  • (a) the value of k
  • (b) the other root of the equation.

Solⁿ:

  • Root: 3

• For k, put 3 as x

p(x) = 3

= (3)² - k(3) + 12 = 0

9 - 3k + 12 = 0

21 -3k = 0

21 = 3k

7 = k

______________

• For other root, put value of k in the eqⁿ and solve

= x² -7x +12 = 0

x² -3x -4x +12 = 0

x(x -3) -4(x -3) = 0

(x-3)(x-4) = 0

Zeroes are: x = 3, x = 4

k : 7

k : 7Other root: 4
