Correct Question :-

  • If 3 (x - 1) = 2x - 11, find the value of 'x'.

Answer :-

 Q) \: \sf3 \: (x - 1) = 2x - 11

Removing the brackets,

 \hookrightarrow\sf3x - 3 = 2x - 11

Putting the constant and variable terms on different sides by the method of transposition,

 \hookrightarrow\sf3x - 2x = - 11 + 3

On simplifying,

 \hookrightarrow\underline{ \boxed{\sf x =  - 8}}

  • To check our answer, let's put -8 in the place of x and see whether LHS = RHS.

LHS

 \rightarrow\rm3 \: (x - 1)

Substituting the value of x,

 \rightarrow\rm3 \: ( - 8 - 1)

Removing the brackets,

 \rightarrow\rm - 24 - 3

Subtracting -3 from -24,

 \rightarrow \rm- 27

RHS

 \rightarrow\rm2x - 11

Substituting the value of x,

 \rightarrow\rm2 \times - 8 - 11

Applying the BODMAS rule and multiplying 2 with -8 first,

  \rightarrow\rm- 16 - 11

Subtracting 11 from -16,

  \rightarrow\rm- 27

Since LHS = RHS,

Hence verified!
