Total number of boys + girls appeared in the examination = 320 + 180 = 500 students

Total number of boys = 320

Boys passed = 60 %

Boys failed = 100 - 60 = 40 %

Total number of boys failed = (40*320)/100

= 128 Boys failed out of 320 boys.

Total number of girls = 180

Girls passed = 80 %

Girls failed = 100 - 80 = 20 %

Total number of girls failed = (20*180)/100

= 36 girls failed

Total number of boys + girls failed = 128 + 36 = 164 Students

Percentage of failed students = (164*100)/500

=32.8 %

Hey there!!

Here's your answer

Let us assume that the total students who took part in the exam to be x

Let us assume that the students who lost be y

But in the question, it is given that y = 8% of x = 0.08x

We know that  340 + y = x

⇒ 340 + 0.08 x = x

⇒ 340 = 0.02 x

⇒ x = 17000

So,  a total of 17000 students appeared for the exam

Hope it helps you!!

marialaju: thank you
