391 bananas were distributed among the three monkeys in the ratio 1/2 : 2/3 : 3/4

The sum of the ratios

= 1/2 + 2/3 + 3/4

= 23/12

The the ratio of the first monkey = 1/2

So, the first monkey got

= (1/2)/(23/12) x 391

= 102

The first monkey got 102 bananas

Let proportionality constant is x
Then, fist monkey got bananas = x/2
2nd monkey got bananas = 2x/3
and 3rd monkey got bananas = 3x/4

so, x/2 + 2x/3 + 3x/4 = 391
⇒ (6x + 8x + 9x)/12 = 391
⇒ 23x/12 = 391
⇒23x = 391 × 12
⇒x = 17 × 12

Now, fist monkey got bananas = x/2 = 17 × 12/2 = 17 × 6 = 102
