Answer:

3a - b = 8....(1)

a + 4b = 7

a = 7 - 4b....(2)

by (1) and (2)

3(7 - 4b) - b = 8

21 - 12b - b = 8

21 - 13b = 8

13 = 13b

b = 1

by (1)

3a - b = 8

3a - 1 = 8

3a = 9

a = 3

a = 3, b = 1

therefore, a + b = 3 + 1 = 4
