3x+5y:3x-y is equal to 7:1

  • Given,

              3x + 4y:x+2y = 9:4

          ⇒ \frac{3x+4y}{x+2y} = \frac{9}{4}

          ⇒ 4(3x + 4y) = 9(x + 2y)

          ⇒ 12x + 16y = 9x + 18y

          ⇒ 12x - 9x = 18y - 16y

          ⇒ 3x = 2y         ----------------------(1)

  • Now, consider

          3x + 5y : 3x - y = \frac{3x+5y}{3x-y}

                                   = \frac{2y+5y}{2y-y}                 [From (1)]

                                   = \frac{7y}{y}

                                   = \frac{7}{1}

                                   = 7:1
