-4 is root of

 {x}^{2}  + px - 4 =  0

so - 4 will satisfy this eq.

( - 4) {}^{2}  - 4p - 4 = 0

16 - 4 = 4p

p = 3

putting value of P in 2nd equation..

 {x}^{2}  + 3x + k = 0

it has equal roots, so it's discriminant = 0

 {3}^{2}  - 4k = 0

4k = 9

k =  \frac{9}{4}  \:  \: ans.
