Lets suppose that the initial number is x
Since 40% of this number is 290
=> 40% of x = 290
=> x × 40/100 = 290
=> x × 2/5 = 290
=> x = (290×5)/2
=> x = 725
So the initial number is 725
We have to find the number which is 20% more than 725
=> Required number = 725 + 725 × 20/100
=> Required number = 725 + 725 × 1/5
=> Required number = 725 + 145
=> Required number = 870
Hence the number which is 20% more than the initial number is 870
