Given that 1000 soldiers have enough food for 180 days.

Hence After 20 days, the remaining food is sufficient for 180 - 20 = 160 days.

Given Remaining soldiers after 20 days = 1000 + 600 = 1600.

Let the remaining food be x.

1000 : 1600 :: x : 160

1000 * 160 = 1600x

160000 = 1600x

x = 100 days.

Question-

If 48 men have ration for 16 days how long will the food last if a reinforcement of 16 men arrived?

Answer-

For this question, we have to first understand if this is a question of direct proportion or inverse proportion.

Here, the more the men, the less time the food will last. Similarly, the less the men, the more time the food will last.

So, this is a question of inverse proportion.

48 men ∝ 1/16

Equate it

48 = 16

1 = 48 × 16

16 additional men have been added.

Then the total number of men become 64

64 = (48 × 16)/64 = 768/64 = 12 days

The food will last for 12 days if a reinforcement of 16 additional men arrives.
