     4 tan theta            = 3

        tan theta            = 3/4

sin theta/cos theta    = 3/4

therefore sin theta = 3

               cos theta = 4

then  (cos ^2 theta - sin ^2 theta )

        = ( 4^2 - 3^2)

        =  (4 - 3) (4+3)

        =  1 * 7

        =   7

therefore (cos^2 theta - sin^2 theta ) = 7
